May

We looked at Weight in maths where we used weighing scales and examined weights of food items.
Picture
Picture
We made the most of the weather and went for a little walk to the shop.
Picture
We experimented for cooking by making our favourite deli food - jambons which turned out well. We also made nachos.
Picture
We say this a lot, but we are saying it again... this was the nicest thing we have cooked so far. We made a takeaway favourite- spice bag/ spice box. Ms. Walsh wasn’t able for the spice but we all loved it, as you can see us tucking in.
Picture
We celebrated a very special birthday this month with a trip for coffee in McDonalds.

April

Below are photos of one of our nicest creations - Banoffee Pie.
We used this as a goal for learning as part of our Level 2 Junior Cycle programme. We set ourselves the task of learning how to make it as it is an easy dessert to make for any occasion.
Picture

Below are images of meditation on the left (all looking very relaxed) and on the right we were working hard writing or drawing our thoughts and feelings when listening to different types of music.
Thanks to Ms. Southern for the invitation for a game of hockey. It's always nice to join in with other classes for P.E.
We began to get to grips with our new class iPad - just in time for the element of using a new piece of technology for our Junior Cycle.
Picture
We learned a very valuable skill this month which was sending emails. We discussed the importance of emails and we didn't realise how much they are used. We sent emails to companies to enquire about wheelchair accessibility in places of interest for our upcoming Gaisce trip. The replies have given us food for thought for booking activities on the trip.
This also fitted in nicely to our element of researching different websites and opening and sending emails.

March

We did lots of work on our theme of Ireland.
We began learning a new skill this month which was sewing. We sewed the Irish colours together to make an Irish flag. We displayed them in the hall for our Irish Day.
Picture
Here is an example of our great work on the Famine and learning to take notes.
We also had a quiz on labelling the map of Ireland (which is very tricky!)
Picture
Some of our life skills; shopping for ingredients before we cook and some of our Level 2 Junior Cert Preparing for Work where we look at health and safety. We are examining the fire exits and fire extinguishers and where they are located in the school.
Picture
Making tea, cooking, setting the table and washing the dishes are more important life skills that we learn.
Picture
Below are some photos of us hard at work on the laptops getting some of our QQI Level 3 in General Learning completed.

February

Most of the class went out on work experience in February. The image below shows the placements that the class got to work in. There were students in car valeting, a gym, a florist, a charity shop, on a farm and in a petrol station. It was such a huge learning experience for everyone and we are so grateful for the businesses for taking on our students.
Picture
We took to the kitchen in between working. We learned how to make pasta with stir-in sauce and sloppy joes (which we learned are extremely nice).
Picture
Below is a selection of other things we got up to in February.
We played some Oral Language games.
We practiced using the self-service checkout in Dunnes.
We did mini projects on a part of the human body using books to research and presented to the class.
We had a look at the sugar content in popular drinks.

January

Our two themes for January were Winter and the Solar System.
For the theme of Winter we made a Winter Sky using oil pastels on black card.
We discussed all the words we associate with Winter and wrote an Acrostic Poem which you can read below.
Picture
Much to the joy of the class we set up a mini circuit training session in the hall.
Picture
We continued with our School Saving Scheme which we have extra help with now as it is being done as part of Gaisce.
We did a unit on Time in maths and spent time trying to figure out Time Zones around the world.
Picture
For the theme of the Solar System we focused on the characteristics of the different planets.
We used a PowerPoint to learn the names and properties of the planets and then used shaving foam and food colouring marbling to create a planet each for our display.
Picture
Picture
Below are photos of us sorting different properties of planets. We had a competition to see what team got the most right. Ms. Walsh was very impressed with how much we remembered.
Picture
We put back on our aprons after a few weeks of not being in the kitchen. This month we focused on reading labels on how to cook foods. The students brought in foods to cook and we also tried our hand at lasagne and cookies by reading the instructions.
Picture
Picture
We had a few outings this month.
We took a trip to McDonald's to celebrate a special birthday and we went to the cinema to see 'The Post' which we were very interested in seeing. We learned all about the Vietnam war and US Presidents leading up to the film to give us the background.

December

We celebrated a special birthday this month.

November

Where did November go?
We have been in a haze of Christmas decorations for the month. We are putting the finishing touches on all our products ready for the market.
Picture
We have our usual weekly counting of the school savings.... if ye are ever wondering what happens when we collect it.
We check it, count it, bag it and lodge it each week.
Picture
On our theme of houses and homes we did measurement in Maths. We used trundle wheels, metre sticks and measuring tape to measure different areas around the school and even got a bit of exercise in to see how far we could sprint in 20 seconds.
Picture
Our chefs got back in the kitchen again. On the menu were enchiladas, tacos, smoothies and milkshakes.
We also got a trip down to McDonald's for a coffee to celebrate a special 16th birthday!

Picture
Our biggest achievement during November was making a start on our QQI Level 3 course. It is an excellent resource and hopefully we will all get our certificate at the end of it. There will be no stopping us then!
Click here for more information about it.

October

Our themes for the month were Autumn and Halloween. Below is just a snapshot of the work that goes on here in Secondary 3.
The first pictures show SPHE circle time where we expressed how we felt in different scenarios.
We also got started on studying for our Theory Test which we are aiming towards.
Picture
For cooking this month we set up stations. One station was pancakes, another station was cheese on toast and the last station was French toast. It is great to see we can all make these with no help!
Picture
During art we had fun with markers and coffee filter paper, it turned out like tie-dye. We also used Autumn leaves for painting.
Picture
We couldn't leave Halloween pass without getting creative carving pumpkins!
Picture
And while we were at it, we used the pumpkin for a science experiment.
Picture
We made some Halloween treats of caramel and chocolate apples and tea-brack.

September

Welcome back to everyone after the Summer Holidays. We were raring to get started into our new class this year!

Our themes this month were Myself and School.
What better way to start off the theme by a self-portrait...with a twist of course.
Picture
We took advantage of the fine weather and took our art outside. We used bubbles and food colouring to create a very unusual piece of art.
Picture
We had two special birthday's in our class but we don't get away with being given a birthday cake.....we had to make it ourselves. It turns out we are pretty good bad at baking!! For the other birthday we decided to celebrate with coffee and cake downtown....we are good to ourselves.
Picture
We began guided meditation which was well earned the day after our trip to Croke Park and we begun using the interactive whiteboard for maths. We got a little bit competitive on this timed money activity.
