Cooking

We have been cooking different types of breakfast, lunch and dinner on certain Thursdays for some time. We are all excellent chefs at this stage.
We already made a fry,
omelettes, spaghetti carbonara, sweet chilli fajitas, curry cheese chips, 2 types of pizzas, stir-fry with noodles, potato and leek soup, Thai green curry, fish and chips and an Irish dinner of spuds, cabbage and bacon with white sauce. We eat the food we make in school or we bring it home with us. We try our best to make a healthy version of meals that we might get in a restaurant or at a take-away.

Our best moment so far for cooking has to be making butter. We never knew it was so easy. All we did was put cream into a jar and shook the jar until lumps started to form, we kept shaking it until butter formed.
We had the butter on bread and dipped it into our homemade leak and potato soup. It was delicious!

Human Body

This week we have been learning about the Human Body. We learned about the function of the main organs. We put together a skeleton and placed the organs in the correct position. We checked our pulse before and after exercise to see the effect of exercise on our hearts....we never realised how fast our heart beats!

Here is all we have learned about the human body
Heart Dissection
While learning about the heart, we were able to dissect a sheep's heart. It was very interesting to see the four chambers and the main arteries in the heart.

Technology

Picture
We had learned a lot about technology a few weeks back. How it affects us and how it works. We found out that technology was different in the past, for it was very different then the technology that exists today. We learned a lot about Facebook and other social media and the do's and don'ts involving them. We debated about mobile phones and whether they should be banned from school or not. We conducted a survey on internet use and most popular social media and learned about Internet Safety.

Health

We learned a lot about how we can keep our bodies healthy.
We learned about how different colour fruit and vegtables have different jobs in our body. We did a food dairy on what we had eaten during the week. We made a display showing things that will help us live a healthy life foe example getting enough sleep, keeping clean, staying positive, visiting the doctor, drinking water and eating healthy a balanced diet.

We are doing Food Dudes which gives us the chance to taste different fruit and veg each day and we also get rewards. We will also use some fruit and veg for making milkshakes and fruit salad and other treats that are both tasty and healthy.

Christmas Market

Before Christmas we started making products for the Christmas market. We made birdhouses, birdtables, decorations for the tree, fairy doors and Christmas logs. We spent a lot of time painting, varnishing and decorating the products and we were ready to sell at the Country Market in Abbeyside and the Farmers Market in the Square.

With the money we gathered, we all decided on the best way to spend it. We went to Waterford where we visited Waterford Crystal and The Viking Triangle where we got guided tours. We then went bowling and had a lovely pizza.

Some Activities in the Leavers Class

We have been very busy here in the Leavers class for the last couple of weeks, between trips away, projects, visits to the class and visits to different places around the town. Here are a few things that we have done:

Electricity
We had great fun figuring out how to make a bulb light, then even more fun finding out how to make two bulbs light! We made lighthouses and made cars that we wired with our circuits and even had a visit from an electrician on safety around electricity and learning how to wire a plug.

Ardmore
We took a trip to Ardmore to visit the Round Tower, old church and went on the Cliff Walk.

Radio Station Visit
We organised a trip to the WLR studio in Dungarvan and met with Oliver Carroll. He showed us how he presents his afternoon show, records pieces and edits.  We even got a chance to record a short message that he put on the radio that evening.

Travel and Transport
We invited a mechanic into the school to show us a few things about cars. He showed us how to change a wheel, check the oil, fill the oil and showed us all the parts under the bonnet. We all learned a lot...staff included!
We also had a visit from a driving instructor who explained all about road safety and the driving test. He showed us a video and gave us high-visibility vests for walking.
